Forwarding Your UGAMail (Keep a Copy or Not)

UGAMail
------------------------

Forwarding Your Mail Using OPTIONS: FORWARDING (UGAMail WebMail)

Many users choose to forward their UGAMail messages to another email account.

Using the built-in UGAMail Webmail OPTIONS: FORWARDING method to forward your mail unfortunately forwards ALL of your mail, including SPAM and Junk Mail, with the following exception:

Outbound (forwarded) Spam is being discarded based on the following metrics for keep/discard:
- Mail with a UCE score over 100
- AND Mail not from someone at *uga.edu
- AND Mail not to someone at *uga.edu
- AND X-SafeSendersList does not contain "YES"
This will catch spam sent to @uga.edu addresses who are then forwarding to some other place like AOL or Yahoo.

This rule reduces the amount of SPAM and Junk Mail that is forwarded by UGAMail, however, a lot of SPAM and Junk Mail still gets through and is forwarded to other servers from UGAMail.

If you choose to forward your mail to another email address, you can reduce the amount of spam forwarded by UGAMail to your other email account by setting up a set of Message Filters to forward your mail AFTER the Junk Mail Filter (and other filters ) have been applied.

Forwarding Your Mail Using Message Filters (Recommended)

In order to keep from forwarding SPAM and Junk Mail received at your UGAMail account to another email server, you can create a set of Message Filters that will forward your mail AFTER the Junk Mail filter and other filters have been applied.

There are a few steps to set up Mail Forwarding. First, you must turn on your Junk Mail Filter. Then you can create a Message Filter that will forward all of the messages that passed inspection by the Junk Mail Filter. By default, copies of UGAMail forwarded messages are not kept. If you wish to keep a copy of each message that is forwarded, you'll need to create a Message Filter to do that also. Finally, Message Filters have to be in a particular order to function properly.

We also recommend that you login to UGAMail occasionally to check you Junk Mail Folder. No filtering system is perfect, and legitmate emails will sometimes end up in the Junk Mail Folder.

All of your Mail Filtering Options are available from the UGAMail Webmail interface. Login to UGAMail Webmail from http://www.ugamail.uga.edu and

1) ACTIVATE THE SYSTEM-CONFIGURED JUNK MAIL FILTER

Select "Options" --> "Junk Mail Control" --> "Junk Mail Filter"

Result: The Junk Mail Control page Junk Mail Filter view displays.

In the Select a Filter Condition turn the filter on by selecting the following:

Normal (Junk Mail only): Only system-identified Junk Mail is subject to your specified filter action.

In the Filter Action area select Move to the junk mail folder (default and preferred): Matching messages are moved to your junk mail folder.

Select Do not apply any more filters to this message if action is taken: If the message qualified for action by the Junk Mail filter, any filters in order below the Junk Mail filter are not applied.

Once you have created your filter, click OK.
Result: The system accepts the settings for the Junk Mail filter. Incoming messages are filtered and acted upon as directed.

Message Filters are appiled in chronological order. Generally, you want the Junk Mail Filter to be the #1 filter. To change the order of the filters, use the up and down arrows in the 'order' column.

2) Incoming messages that make it through the Junk Mail Filter are moved to your Inbox. (This filter is necessary ONLY if you wish to keep a copy of each forwarded message.)

3) Messages in your Inbox are forwarded to the email address that you specified in the filter.
