1. How do I determine where my profile is stored?

Netscape 4.x Profiles are stored in the Program Files folder. The typical path is as follows:

C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\[profile name]

2. How do I import Address Book entries?

Netscape 4.x can import several different file formats.  Start Netscape Messenger, choose Communicator, Tools, Import Utility. Common formats that Netscape 4.x can import are LDIF and Text files.

3. How do I configure Netscape to use the UGA LDAP directory service?

  1. Launch Netscape Messenger.
  2. Open the Address Book by choosing Address Book from the Communicator menu.
  3. From the Address Book File menu, choose New Directory. Fill in the Description, LDAP Server and Search Root fields.
  4. Description:=uga
  5. LDAP Server: = directory.uga.edu
  6. Search Root: = o=uga,c=us
  7. Click OK and close the Address Book.

Netscape 4.x can use the LDAP directory from the compose window with Pinpoint Addressing.

  1. From the Netscape Messenger Window, choose Edit, Preferences.
  2. Select “Addressing” under the Mail and Newsgroups category.
  3. In the Pinpoint Addressing options (right hand panel) check the option “Directory Server” and select the directory defined in the previous steps.

4. How do I display Full Headers?

  1. Launch Netscape Messenger.
  2. Choose View, Headers, All.

5. How do I set the time interval for Netscape to check for new messages?

  1. Launch Netscape Messenger.
  2. Select  Edit, Preferences.
  3. Select “Mail Servers” under the Mail and Newsgroups category.
  4. In the “incoming mail servers” panel on the right, select the UGA incoming mail server.
  5. Click the Edit button.
  6. On the General tab, check the option to “Check for mail every” and specify the desired time interval.

6. How do I disable the Netscape banner AD that is displayed each time I start Netscape Messenger  (displayed in the Message Pane)?

  1. Close all Netscape Windows. (Navigator and Messenger)
  2. Use your Operating System’s Search function to locate the file ‘prefs.js’. You may Find more than one on your system if you have multiple accounts configured for Netscape.
  3. Verify you have the correct file by looking at the location and making sure it is the ‘prefs.js’ assocaited with the profile for which you are setting the option.
  4. Make a copy of the file for backup. Select the file and press Ctrl+C and then Ctrl+V.
  5. Edit the file and add the following line to the bottom of the file. Select the line below and press Ctrl+C to copy the line. In Windows, right-click the file and choose Edit.

  1. Move to the end of the file and press Ctrl+V to paste the line at the bottom of the file.
  2. Save the file by choosing File, Save.
  3. Close the file.
  4. Restart Netscape.

7. How do I set options for handling Deleted messages?

  1. Launch Netscape Messenger.
  2. Select  Edit, Preferences.
  3. Select “Mail Servers” under the Mail and Newsgroups category.
  4. In the “incoming mail servers” panel on the right, select the UGA incoming mail server.
  5. Click the Edit button.
  6. On the IMAP tab, ), set the desired option for “When I delete a message:” The choices are Move to Trash, Mark as Deleted, or Remove immediately.
  7. You can also specify whether you wish the Inbox to be “Expunged on Exit” or for the Trash to be “Emptied on Exit.”.

8. How do I specify a folder for Sent mail?

By default, Netscape Messenger  is set to save outgoing messages in a folder named “Sent” on the IMAP server. To check or change the setting.

  1. Launch Netscape Messenger.
  2. Select  Edit, Preferences.
  3. Select “Copies and Folders” under the Mail and Newsgroups category.
  4. In the Copies and Folders Panel, check the option for “Place a Copy in” and specify the desired folder by clicking the “Choose Folder” button.

9. How do I refresh the list of folders?

It is possible that you have created a new folder in webmail but the folder does not appear in Netscape.  Follow these steps to subscribe to the folder.

  1. Launch Netscape Messenger.
  2. Select File, Subscribe.
  3. Netscape should query the server for folders. When the folder is listed, select it and click the subscribe button.
  4. Click the OK button to return to the message list.

10. How do I create a signature file?

  1. Create the signature file on your system using a editor and make sure you save it as ASCII (Plain Text).
  2. Launch Netscape Messenger.
  3. Select  Edit, Preferences.
  4. Select “Identity” under the Mail and Newsgroups category.
  5. On the Identity panel click the Choose button to select the desired text file created in Step 1 above.

11. How do I start Netscape Messenger using a specific Profile?

  1. Create a shortcut to the Netscape Messenger program on the desktop.
  2. Right-click the shortcut icon and choose Properties.
  3. Note the target line, "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program\netscape.exe"  -mail.
  4. Add -P "ProfileName" (including the dash) . The complete target line should now read as follows,
     "C:\Program Files\Netscape\Communicator\Program\netscape.exe"  -mail -P "ProfileName"

12. How do I attach a file to a message?

  1. Launch  Netscape Messenger.
  2. From the “Compose Message” window, click the “Attach” button on the toolbar and choose File.
  3. Locate the desired file in the directory window. Select the file and click Open.

13. How do I add an individual entry to my addressbook?

  1. Launch  Netscape Messenger.
  2. Choose “Address Book” from the Communicator menu.
  3. Click the “New Card” button on the toolbar and fill in the information. Minimially, you probably want to complete the name, nickname and e-mail address fields.

14. How do I add a distribution list to my addressbook?

  1. Launch  Netscape Messenger.
  2. Choose “Address Book” from the Communicator menu.
  3. Click the “New List” button on the toolbar.
  4. Fill in a name and nickname for the list. Drag entries from the Address Book Window into the List Window. Or type the desired addresses.
