IMAP - OS X Pine (Macintosh)

UGAMail
------------------------

SSL is a security option for use with the UGAMail system, and we encourage you to use SSL whenever possible. However, problems are being reported with inbound SSL (most notably when automatically copying mail to the Sent Folder). If you experience any problems when sending mail, try disabling the inbound SSL setting.

If you would like to read your UGAMail email mail with OS X Pine, you will need to follow these instructions to configure it properly.

The OS X Pine v 4.50 (with SSL and LDAP) installer package is available on SITESOFT.UGA.EDU and is accessible from any Mac on campus (to reach SITESOFT: do a Go, Connect to Server and type the address SITESOFT.UGA.EDU then access as a Guest and look in Via Appleshare/network/email).

This program requires OS 10.2 or higher. Note that the installer places the Unix Pine command on your Mac, it does not install an application.

Step One
Launch the Utility named Terminal. Type in ' pine '

The very first time you invoke Pine, it will create a folder in your home directory named 'mail' to store all Pine mail folders, ie /Users/your-mac-acctname/mail.

Also the very first time you invoke Pine, it displays a Greeting Text window. Enter Return (to be counted) or E (exit without being counted).

Step Two
When the main Menu appears, choose option S (for Setup) by the arrow keys on your keypad, or type S.

Then select option C (for Configure).

The settingsyou need to be concerned with for ARCHES are listed below.

Use the arrow keys to highlight a setting and press Return. At the bottom of the window, enter the new value, and Return to accept that new value.

personal-name                         = Firstname Lastname
user-id                                     = Your MyID
user-domain                            = uga.edu

For UGAMail
smtp-server                             = email.uga.edu
inbox-path                               = {email.uga.edu/ssl}inbox
default-fcc                               = {email.uga.edu/ssl}Sent
default-saved-msg-folder        = {email.uga.edu/ssl}
postponed-folder                    = {email.uga.edu/ssl}Draft

Once these are entered, choose E to Exit Setup. It will ask if you want to save the configuration changes, answer Y or Yes to save them.

Step Three
This step is very important so you can see your previous mail folders that were moved from Arches.

When the main Menu appears, choose option S (for Setup) by typing S. Then type an L for collectionLists.

You will see a screen saying ' local folders in Mail '. Press return, or C for Change. Alter the settings as listed below:

Nickname = ugamail
Server = email.uga.edu
Path = leave blank
View = leave blank

Enter ctl-

X to save the changes. You should now see a screen saying ' Folders on email.uga.edu in home directory'

Select E to Exit Setup. It will ask if you want to save the configuration changes, answer Y or Yes to save them.

Step Four
You are now ready to process your email. Each time you invoke Pine, it will ask for your MyID and password. These are not set by default since OS X is multiuser and you don't want everyone on your Mac using those values.

OS X Pine is a fully featured IMAP e-mail client. There are many other features available for configuration. Use Pine's Help feature for more information.
