SSL is a security option for use with the UGAMail system, and we encourage you to use SSL whenever possible. However, problems are being reported with inbound SSL (most notably when automatically copying mail to the Sent Folder). If you experience any problems when sending mail, try disabling the inbound SSL setting.

Microsoft's Outlook Express is an e-mail client integrated into Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

If you would like to read your mail with Outlook Express on a Windows system, you will need to follow these instructions to configure it properly. The screen shots are applicable for Outlook Express versions 5, 5.5 and 6.

Step One

Launch Outlook Express and pull down the Tools menu, then select Accounts. You should now see the Internet Accounts screen.

 

Step Two

Click on Add and then Mail. You should now see the Internet Connection Wizard for Your Name screen. Type in your name as you would like for it to appear on your e-mail.

 

Step Three

Click on Next at the bottom of the panel. It will take you to the Internet Connection Wizard for Internet E-mail Address screen. Type in your e-mail address. This should be your MyID@uga.edu

 

Step Four

Click on Next at the bottom of the panel. It will take you to the Internet Connection Wizard for E-mail Server Names screen. This is an important panel to fill out correctly.

On the line that asks "My incoming mail server is a" select IMAP.

In the text field that reads "Incoming mail (POP3, IMAP or HTTP) server." type email.uga.edu as shown.

In the final text field that reads "Outgoing mail (SMTP) server." type email.uga.edu as shown.

 

Step Five

Click on Next at the bottom of the panel. It will take you to the Internet Connection Wizard for Internet Mail Login screen. Type in the user name part of your e-mail address. For security, we recommend un-checking the option to Remember password.

 

Step Six

Click on Next at the bottom of the panel. It will take you to the Internet Connections Wizard for Congratulations screen. Click on Finish.

 

Step Seven

Click on the Properties button of the Internet Accounts dialog box to get to the Properties dialog box for the newly created account.

 

Step Eight

On the General tab, you can type in a friendly name for your account, such as Work Email. Otherwise, the account will be listed as email.uga.edu.

 

Step Nine

On the Advanced tab, check the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) box for Outgoing mail and Incoming Mail.

Click "OK" to close this box, then click "Close" to close the Internet Accounts box.

After logging in to your account, the Show/Hide IMAP folders box may display. Highlight any folder names that do not have an small yellow icon next to them and click the "Show" button, if needed. Click "OK."

Personal Configuration Options

To make other personal configuration options, pull down the Tools menu and choose Options. As you click on the various tabs you will see options to personalize how you process your e-mail.

Under the General tab, make sure When starting, go directly to my Inbox folder is NOT checked. An error message can be generated if Outlook Express attempts to access the Inbox before you have authenticated.

You might want to also specify Check for new messages every 10 minutes. This is a reasonable amount of time.

 

Other Options

We recommend that (unless everyone you correspond with has an HTML equipped mail reader) you click on the Send tab. Under Mail Sending Format select Plain Text. Then click OK.
