IMAP - Netscape Messenger (Windows)
UGAMail
------------------------

SSL is a security option for use with the UGAMail system, and we encourage you to use SSL whenever possible. However, problems are being reported with inbound SSL (most notably when automatically copying mail to the Sent Folder). If you experience any problems when sending mail, try disabling the inbound SSL setting.

If you would like to read your e-mail with Netscape Messenger on a Windows system, you will need to follow these instructions to configure it properly.

Step One

Launch Netscape Communicator 4.x. If this is the first time running Netscape, you will be prompted to create a new user profile. Note: If the Creating a New Profile wizard does not start you may already have an existing profile. To Edit an existing Profile, see the Netscape 4.8 "Editing an Existing Account" document.

If you want to create a new profile, launch the Netscape User Profile Manager. The User Profile manager is a utility that is installed along with Netscape. To launch the utility, Click the Windows Start button, point to Programs, Netscape Communicator, Utilities and then User Profile Manager.

Step Two

On the Enter your Name and Email Address screen, type your name and e-mail address in the appropriate fields. It will be your myid@uga.edu . Click on Next to continue.

Step Three

You will be prompted for a profile name and location on the Choose a Name and Directory for your Profile screen. By default, the profile has the same name as the user name part of your e-mail address entered in the previous step. Accept the defaults by clicking the Next button.

Step Four

In the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server field, type email.uga.edu and click on Next to continue.

Step Five

On the Set up your Incoming Mail Server screen you will be asked to enter your Mail server user name, Incoming Mail Server and select a Mail Server type. Your MyID user name should already be entered in the Mail server user name field. Type email.uga.edu as the Incoming Mail Server and select IMAP as the Mail Server type. Click Next to continue the configuration process.

Step Six (OPTIONAL)

The Set up your Newsgroup Server screen allows you to specify a News (NNTP) server address to configure Netscape Communicator 4.x to read Usenet news. Click Finish to create the profile.

Step Seven

Once in Netscape Messenger, pull down the Edit menu and choose Preferences. Click the + beside Mail & Newsgroups, then click Mail Servers. The incoming mail server set up during the profile creation should be listed to the right. Highlight the email.uga.edu mail server and click Edit. Under the IMAP tab, make sure the Use secure connection (SSL) box is checked.

Under the "When I delete a message:" area, make sure to select "mark it as deleted." This is the supported option for UGAMail.

Step Eight

While still in the mail server properties, select the Advanced tab.

"IMAP server directory" should be left blank.

UNCHECK "Show only subscribed folders."

CHECK "Server supports folders that contain sub-folders and messages."

Make sure the last three preferences (personal namespace, public, and other users) don't have anything listed, and CHECK "Allow server to override these namespaces" box.

Step Nine

Click “OK” one time to close the Mail Server Properties box. (If the Preferences box does not remain open, pull down the Edit menu and choose Preferences again.)

Under Mail & Newsgroups click Formatting. We recommend that (unless everyone you correspond with has an HTML equipped mail reader) you select “Use the plain text editor to compose messages” under “Message formatting.” Click “OK” to save these changes.

Step Ten

Pull down the Communicator menu and choose Messenger to begin reading your e-mail.
